A couple days later, the press used to tablet “half the world’s LSD”, was recovered from a taxi cab of Leslie Daniels, a young man who was going from a bus stop in Downtown St. Louis to the home in Fenton. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote that it was “the largest illegal drug manufacturing operation ever seen in St. Louis County.” The documentary did a wonderful job with pacing and shining a light on the personalities and renegade aspects of the two men behind story, while not getting too bogged down with pro-hippie nostalgia or anti-government commentary.
While in prison, Sand worked on a book titled Psychedelic Secrets, which detailed insights and advice on how to use psychedelic drugs to explore the mind, but this book would go unpublished. Nick Sand’s life as a hiding fugitive is just as incredible a story as his life in the heart of the counterculture scene. His interest in psychedelic substances never faded, and he continued his passion in different avenues. The Brotherhood’s activities were eventually caught on by law enforcement, and many members were arrested for drug-related offenses as the government cracked down on his hippie subculture.
I’m glad that the film makes our story accessible to everyone, so they can have some sense of what we were up to. We were trying to do something good — it may not have worked out, but we had good intentions. It debuted in the Bay Area scene in 1970, made in an underground lab operated by Waldron Vorhees and company. Tim Scully is a legend in the psychedelic community, and without him, hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people would not have been exposed to the mind-opening experiences LSD provides. He was instrumental in bringing the wonders of LSD to the San Francisco area psychedelics community and is one of the few people who can act as a bridge between the worlds of science and mind-expanding drugs like LSD. They set up their own massive underground LSD operation, in a lab tucked away in the Vancouver suburb of Port Coquitlam.
Psychedelic Resources
But in October 1966, LSD became illegal in California, and Stanley and Scully moved to Denver to set up a new lab. In the late 1960s, a small group of hippie zealots worked feverishly in an old Windsor farmhouse to produce an especially pure form of LSD, on a mission to turn on the world. One of my many regrets is that the work we did shut down research for so many years. I’m thrilled to see that the research is moving ahead and I hope it accelerates.
The same situation is found in Austria, Latvia, Poland, and other European countries. However, despite these findings, there have not been any human trials with this substance, so the safety of ALD-52 remains theoretical at the present moment. There hasn’t been much research on ALD-52, despite how long it’s been around.
